Arts Courses Enhance Many Career Choices

As part of the series to share noteworthy programs from each of the 16 career clusters, this sixth article focuses on the Arts, A/V Technology, and Communication Career Cluster. Previous issues covered agriculture, STEM, transportation, education, and architecture.

South Carolina's “Creating a Career with the Arts in Mind” is a new Instructional Television (ITV) series designed to provide in-depth information on careers in the Arts, A/V Technology and Communication Career Cluster. Arts leaders from the South Carolina Department of Education conduct interviews with eight South Carolina artists from 16 of the career clusters about their careers related to the arts. This series also contains segments in which working artists discuss how they actively pursue their art careers. These streamed videos can be used by guidance personnel, educators, curriculum directors, parent groups, and students.

This series may be found on South Carolina’s Career Aisle. The site contains career videos, career links, college preparatory courses for targeted jobs and wage expectations for jobs.

Adults Are Critical to Regaining U.S. Leadership in Number of College Degree Holders

The State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) recently released data to show that transitioning adults from high school completion or some college courses to postsecondary degree completion is critical to the U.S. reclaiming its lead among industrialized countries in college degrees earned. Under SHEEO scenarios, about 70 percent of the 14.5 million degrees generated beyond population growth would come from improving the education of adults already in the workforce but who are without a postsecondary credential. The goal of 55 percent U.S. degree attainment to match that of the leading nations cannot be accomplished solely by increasing the degree attainment of traditional-age students. SHEEO provides a state-by-state table showing the number and percentage of degrees both traditional-age students and improvement in the education attainment of adult learners would generate in each of the 50 states.
