Maryland’s Strategy for Filling the Teacher Pipeline
As part of a series to share noteworthy programs from each of the 16 career clusters, this fourth article in OVAE Connection focuses on the Education and Training Career Cluster. Previous issues covered agriculture, food and natural resources; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); and transportation, distribution and logistics.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the educational services field is targeted for growth in the next decade, offering students strong job potential, and thus is a career path worthy of serious consideration. BLS projects wage and salary employment growth of 12 percent in the educational services industry between now and 2018, with an estimated need for 2.4 million new teachers. To fill that need, in 2008, the state of Maryland established the Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM) believing that students from the academy are more likely to enter college-level teacher preparation programs. As a step towards filling the need, Maryland has established at least one teacher academy in each of 11 local school systems. Nearly 1,000 Maryland students have enrolled in teacher academy courses designed for students who intend to pursue a career as an elementary, middle or high school teacher.
TAM is a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)-approved Career and Technology Education (CTE) Program of Study and is aligned with the states’ Education and Training Career Cluster. It was also part of OVAE’s College and Career Transitions Initiative (CCTI) Education and Training TEACH Institute at Anne Arundel Community College). TAM was developed collaboratively among local school systems, community colleges, four-year institutions, and representatives from the university system of Maryland, the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), and MSDE.
OVAE Funds Virtual ELL University to Boost Instructional Quality
OVAE announced last week that, after a national competition, it awarded a three-year contract to DTI Associates in which it is investing more than $2.2 million in a new state-of-the-art National Adult English Language Learning Professional Development Network, also known as English Language Learning University (ELL University). The investment will identify, enhance, and create training resources to help teachers deliver quality English language instruction to adults. ELL University will provide teachers with access to a team of expert faculty, a quarterly online course catalogue, academic departments to enhance their professional growth and practical resources aligned to individual needs of instructors of adult English Language Learners. ELL University will offer faculty office hours, learning clubs, course registration and catalogues and campus life activities that simulate a university experience. Margaret Kirkpatrick Named Colorado’s New State Director of Adult Education
Margaret Kirkpatrick has been selected as Colorado’s new state director of adult education. Kirkpatrick recently retired from her position as principal of California’s Berkeley Adult School. Prior to that, she served as program director of the University of California Berkeley Extension’s adult education and vocational educational credential program and directed a staff development institute serving adult educators. Kirkpatrick is a Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) national trainer for implementation, employability competency, and continuous improvement measure implementation. She also was vice president of the California Council for Adult Education (2006-09) as well as president-elect in 2010, and she served as principal writer of the adult education state plan for the California Department of Education. Kirkpatrick received the 2006 Award of Merit from the California Council for Adult Education.
