New USA Freedom Corps Website Encourages Students To Volunteer

Secretary of Education Rod Paige was joined today by Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps Desiree T. Sayle and Corporation for National and Community Service CEO David Eisner to launch a new website designed to show elementary and middle school students how they can start making a difference by volunteering.

The new website includes four sections: for kids (elementary school students), youth (middle school students), parents, and teachers. Each section includes service stories from the President and Mrs. Bush and others as well as information on how to earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The following are some of the other things included to encourage students to volunteer:

For Kids (Elementary School):
  • Ideas for how kids can start volunteering
  • Games for kids to show how volunteering can be fun and rewarding
  • Links to other Federal websites about volunteering and sites designed for kids and youth
  • Information on how to contact the President and USA Freedom Corps
For Youth (Middle School):
  • Ideas for how young people can get involved in volunteering
  • Games for youth to encourage them to volunteer
  • Links to other Federal websites about volunteering and sites designed for kids and youth
  • Information on how to contact the President and USA Freedom Corps
For Parents:
  • Information about why volunteering is important for children and how parents can support their children’s service project
  • Resources for finding a service project for your child
  • Ideas for getting your family involved in volunteering
  • Information about how your family or your child can earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award
For Teachers:
  • Information about how to bring service-learning to your classroom or school
  • Information about how to start and run an effective service-learning program
  • Ideas for your program and service-learning success
  • Information about how you and your students can earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award
