Recognition of Accrediting Agencies, State agencies for Approval
of Public Postsecondary Vocational Education
AGENCY: Department of Education.
ACTION: Request for Comments on Agency applying to the Secretary for
Renewal of Recognition.

SUBMISSION OF THIRD-PARTY COMMENTS: The Secretary of Education
recognizes, as reliable authorities as to the quality of education
offered by institutions or programs within their scope, accrediting
agencies and State approval agencies for public postsecondary
vocational education and nurse education that meet certain criteria for
recognition. A notice published in the Federal Register on July 2, 1997
(Volume 62, page 35791) invited interested third parties to present
written comments on agencies scheduled for review at the November 1997
meeting of the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and
Integrity. The purpose of this notice is to correct the information
provided in the July 2, 1997 notice regarding the request for an
expansion of scope submitted by the Accrediting Bureau of Health
Education Schools. The correct information is included a that end of
this notice. This notice also extends the deadline for interested third
of scope from August 18, 1997 to September 2, 1997. All other
provisions of the July 2, 1997 Federal Register notice remain in
effect.
Request for an Expansion of Scope
1. Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (Current scope of
recognition; the accreditation of private, postsecondary allied health
education institutions, private medical assistant programs, public and
private medical laboratory technician programs, and allied health
programs leading to the Associate of Applied Science and the Associate
of Occupational Science degree. Requested expansion of scope: the
accredition of institutions offering predominantly allied health
education programs. ``Predominantly'' is defined by the agency as
follows: at least 70 percent of the number of active programs offered
are in the allied health area, and the number of students enrolled in
those programs exceeds 50 percent of the institution's full-time
equivalent (FTE) students, or at least 70 percent of the FTE students
enrolled at the institution are in allied health programs.)
