Particiption: The Missouri Humanities Council is a not-for-profit organization which develops, implements, and funds programs involving lifelong learning. MHC sponsors book discussion groups in local libraries, coordinates a summer Chautauqua program in partnership with the Illinois Humanities Council, provides speakers to not-for-profit organizations, and provides family reading programs state-wide. The family reading initiative, READ from the START, is funded by MHC and private sponsors. The program is provided to parents, grandparents and caregivers throughout Missouri. Each participant receives a set of high-quality children's books to start a home library and engages in discussion of books and the importance of reading to children. Reading aloud is practiced during the session and parents share information with each other to promote successful read-aloud experiences with children from birth to five.
