Federal Student Loan Programs Data Book FY94-FY96
Table 9. Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program number of borrowers and dollar amount of Supplemental Loan for Students (SLS) loans, by type of institution: FY86-FY94
This table shows the number and percent of total FFEL program SLS loan commitments (numbers of borrowers and dollar amounts), by type of institution (public 2- and 4-year, private 2- and 4-year, and proprietary).
- The proportion of SLS dollars committed to borrowers at both public and private 4-year institutions decreased dramatically between FY86 and FY88 and increased between FY88 and FY93. The percentage of SLS dollars committed to borrowers at both public and private 4-year institutions decreased in FY94, the year in which the SLS program ended.
- When comparing the total number of SLS borrowers to the number of SLS dollars committed, SLS borrowers at private 4-year institutions consistently received a higher proportion of dollars compared to their proportion of borrowers. In FY94, for example, 32.0 percent of SLS borrowers at private 4-year institutions were committed 43.0 percent of SLS dollars. In contrast, the proportion of SLS borrowers at public 4-year institutions was 25.8 percent and the proportion of total SLS dollars committed was 23.3 percent.
- The proportion of SLS dollars committed to borrowers at proprietary institutions increased over 53 percentage points between FY86 and FY88 (from 8.2 to 61.5 percent), dropped each year until FY93, then increased to 27.1 percent in FY94.
- Between FY86 and FY94, fluctuations in the proportion of SLS dollars committed to borrowers at public 4-year, private 4-year, and proprietary institutions were 16.7, 44.1, and 53.3 percentage points, respectively. In contrast, fluctuations in the proportion of SLS dollars committed to borrowers at public and private 2-year institutions were much less.
- Between FY88 and FY93, SLS commitments decreased for borrowers at proprietary schools while SLS commitments increased overall for borrowers at public and private 4-year institutions.
