Hoy, el Departamento de Educación de EE.UU. otorgó 76 subvenciones por un total de más de $35 millones a organizaciones comunitarias y agencias educativas locales (LEAs, por sus siglas en inglés) que tienen previsto poner en práctica programas de actividad física y nutrición para sus alumnos mediante el Programa Carol M. White de Educación Física (PEP). Los fondos ayudarán a iniciar, ampliar y mejorar los programas de educación centrados en la cultura física y la nutrición, que administran estas organizaciones, incluidos los programas después de la hora escolar para los estudiantes de kindergarten al 12 grado.
"Con estos fondos, las escuelas tendrán recursos adicionales para ayudar a los estudiantes a ser más saludables y activos", dijo Arne Duncan, secretario de Educación de EE.UU.
Los beneficiarios de las subvenciones tendrán que implementar programas que ayuden a los estudiantes a cumplir con las normas estatales de educación física. Además, estos programas deben 1) instruir sobre los hábitos saludables de alimentación y la buena nutrición, y 2) realizar actividades de acondicionamiento físico que incluyan al menos uno de los siguientes:
- instrucción y asesoramiento sobre el acondicionamiento físico para ayudar a los estudiantes a mejorar y mantener su bienestar físico,
- instrucción en una variedad de habilidades motoras y actividades físicas diseñadas para mejorar el desarrollo físico, mental, social, y emocional de cada estudiante,
- desarrollo y enseñanza de conceptos cognitivos sobre las habilidades motrices y la condición física que apoyan un estilo de vida saludable para toda la vida,
- oportunidades para desarrollar habilidades sociales positivas y de cooperación mediante la actividad física, y
- oportunidades de desarrollo profesional para profesores de educación física para que estén al tanto de las últimas investigaciones, temas y tendencias en el campo de la educación física.
La Oficina de Escuelas Seguras y Libres de Drogas, del Departamento de Educación de EE.UU., administra las subvenciones PEP. También apoya los esfuerzos de crear escuelas seguras, promover la buena salud y el bienestar de los estudiantes, enseñar a los estudiantes a ser ciudadanos responsables y de buen carácter, cómo actuar en una crisis, y evitar las drogas y el abuso del alcohol.
