- Abstract:
- The Federal Direct Student Loan Program (Direct Loans) provides student loans directly from the Federal Government to students and their parents. Private lenders are not involved in this program as they are in the Federal Family Educational Program. Direct Loans provides loans to eligible undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and/or their parents to pay for the costs of the student's attendance at their postsecondary school.
There are four different Direct Loan programs:
- Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program (subsidized Direct Loan) ? loan made to student; U.S. Department of Education pays the student's interest on the loan while the student is in school;
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program ? loan made to student; student is responsible for interest that accrues while in school; and
- Federal Direct PLUS Program ? loans for parents of students.
- Federal Direct Consolidation Program ? loans available to students and PLUS loan borrowers who desire to consolidate their loans into a single loan in order to achieve repayment to a single source, to extend the length of their repayment period, or to obtain a more favorable interest rate.
A student is eligible to receive a Direct Loan if he/she is enrolled in a school that is enrolled in the Direct Loan Program and he/she is eligible for student aid.
