Name of Unit: Application and Pell Processing Systems Division

Abstract:
The Central Processing System (CPS) computes student aid applicants? eligibility for Title IV Student Aid to assist them in attending postsecondary schools. CPS receives data from the Multiple Data Entry (MDE) contractor and sends a Student Aid Report (SAR) to the aid applicant. The SAR lets the student know what financial contribution is expected from them. Students or parents who wish to obtain information pertaining to Title IV Federal student aid should contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) on (800) 4FED-AID. Students who wish to obtain the status of their financial aid applications should contact the FSAIC on (319) 337-5665.

Purpose:
CPS receives student aid application and renewal data from the MDE processor. It edits the data, performs matches with Department of Education and other Federal agency records, and calculates each student?s eligibility for student aid under Title IV of the Higher Education Act.

Agency Program:
Title IV of the Higher Education Act authorizes the Department to calculate students? eligibility for financial aid to attend postsecondary schools.

Sources of Data:
Data come from the MDE processor who processes paper student aid applications and renewal requests, as well as directly from students who use Department software to electronically submit student aid application data to the CPS system. CPS also creates additional data elements by performing calculations on all student application data.

Access Constraints:
Direct access to the system is limited to authorized ED staff. Information in this system is exempt from disclosure under provisions of the Privacy Act.
