The Office of Non-Public Education, in the Office of Innovation and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education, is pleased to provide this guide to National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) survey and report programs providing statistical information about the private and home elementary and secondary school communities in the United States. The guide is intended for use by school officials, administrators, and representatives; parents; and others interested in data regarding nonpublic education. The information in this guide is obtained from NCES websites and publications, and has been reviewed by NCES staff. The Office of Non-Public Education is responsible for any errors or omissions.
What information is provided in this report
Entries under the headings "Primary Surveys and Studies Involving Private Schools and Homeschooling" and "Other Notable Surveys and Studies" are survey programs as classified by NCES. These survey programs collect, analyze, and report statistical data on specific educational topics. For each entry under these headings, an overview of the survey program is provided, as are lists of notable publications and sources for additional information (with hyperlinks). For entries under the heading "Primary Surveys and Studies Involving Private Schools and Homeschooling," program contact information is also provided.
Entries under the heading "Notable Annual Reports" are report programs as classified by NCES. These report programs compile and analyze statistical data across NCES surveys and provide reports on a variety of educational topics. For each entry under this heading, an overview of the report program is provided, as are lists of notable publications and sources for additional information (with hyperlinks).
Appendix A describes NCES web resources that enable users to obtain data and other information on a variety of educational topics of interest to the nonpublic school community, including information on individual private schools.
Appendix B lists resources for additional information on NCES survey and report programs.
