Figure 6: States implementing criteria for assessing performance of teacher preparation programs (TPP), 2002 and 2003

This bar graph shows the number of states implementing criteria for assessing the performance of teacher preparation programs in 2002 and 2003. In both 2002 and 2003, 48 states had implemented criteria for assessing program performance. The number of states whose criteria included pass rates on teacher assessments increased from 25 states in 2002 to 31 states in 2003. The number of states whose criteria include other indicators of teachers’ knowledge and skills increased from 46 in 2002 to 49 in 2003. Additionally, 22 states in 2002, and 26 states in 2003 had other criteria.

Three states responded to questions regarding criteria for assessing teacher preparation programs on their proposed – not implemented criteria. “Other criteria” may include employer satisfaction, teacher rehire or retention rate, teacher survey reflections, teacher portfolios, and quality of field experiences.

For purposes of this figure, the term "state" refers to the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories.

The source for these data is the Title II State Reporting System, 2002 and 2003.
