Fact Sheet Series 2004 - Adult Basic and Literacy Education
Archived Information

The OVAE Fact Sheet Series highlights efforts currently underway at the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) to support the principles of the President's No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The principle(s) supported by this effort are:

  • Increase Accountability and Academic Achievement
  • Increase Options and Involvement for Parents and Students
  • Focus on What Works

Background

One of the key strategic goals of the U.S. Department of Education is "transform education into an evidence-based field." This focus on "what works" includes a call for investment in research-based programs and instructional strategies. To this end, the Department has reorganized its research, evaluation, and statistical offices into a single Institute for Education Sciences and established the "What Works Clearinghouse." These entities will concentrate their efforts on identifying practices that have proven effective through rigorous experimental research methodologies.

Overview

To support the Department's focus on "what works," the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) has launched an effort to identify noteworthy and promising practices to improve adult education programs. Given the lack of rigorous research-based practices in this area, OVAE's efforts will include practices that appear noteworthy and that have an evidentiary base. This research-to-practice initiative provides resources at three levels: identifying evidence-based research and noteworthy practices; translating research findings into learning products and processes that teachers can use to improve instruction; and imbedding those practices, products and processes into teacher training programs in partnership with states.

Outcomes and Products

  • Development of research-based teacher training materials
  • Development of research-based tools for classroom use
  • Increased partnerships with states and their professional development systems to increase capacity to deliver research-based training
  • Web-based information on research-based practices
