ACCELERATED STUDENT SUCCESS THROUGH CREDIT-BASED OPTIONS
Fact Sheet Series 2004 - Secondary and Technical Education
Archived Information

The OVAE Fact Sheet Series highlights efforts currently underway at the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) to support the principles of the President's No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The principle(s) supported by this effort are:
  • Increase Accountability and Academic Achievement
  • Increase Options and Involvement for Parents and Students
  • Focus on What Works
Background

The last quarter of the 20th century saw dramatic changes in postsecondary participation rates. These changes made high schools more aware of the academic and student support services that affect students' transition to college.

One approach to high school improvement allows students to take college courses and earn college credit while still in high school. These programs are: dual enrollment or dual credit, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Tech Prep, and Middle College High Schools (MCHS).

Overview

This OVAE-funded project seeks to capture information on the effectiveness of these programs, the prevelence of programs in secondary and postsecondary institutions, the number of students enrolled, and how programs are structured in order to provide services to students.

Outcomes and Products
  • A focused review of the literature to identify the different program variations and the evidence of program impacts
  • High school and postscondary level surveys to determine what programs are offered, and how many students participate
  • An analysis of state policy to determine the impact of policies on programs, especially the impact of how programs are financed
  • Case studies to identify how programs can be structured to support the postsecondary transition needs of low- to mid-performing students
Timeline
September 2002 - May 2005
