2014 Application for Mandarin Studies -- Deadline: March 31, 2014

In 2014, The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the United States is offering MANDARIN LANGUAGE learning opportunities to any American undergraduate and graduate students, who intend to pursue or have already embarked on a career in which an advanced level of proficiency in Mandarin is important.

TECRO is offering this award to American undergraduate and graduate students, who are enrolled as full-time students at a United States college or university, and who are interested in improving their Mandarin language proficiency through study abroad at a university in Taiwan. Ideal applicants are American citizens who neither hold a Taiwan passport nor claim Taiwanese or Chinese heritage and who meet the following category of eligibility:

  • Current Students and Recent Graduates: must have completed at least six semesters of secondary education Advanced Placement or an equivalence of university-level Mandarin study. Only undergraduate and graduate students who have completed the necessary Mandarin study pre-requisites will be considered for this award. Students should be able to explain how Mandarin will be important to their profession as they transition into the workforce. Though TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) is not required, it is strongly recommended. Applicants who have taken or have registered for the TOCFL test will have higher acceptance priority.

Funds: The program provides recipients with a fixed monthly stipend (NT$25,000, about US$862, rate: 29) to help defray living expenses and tuition in Taiwan. Successful applicants are responsible for all other costs.

Duration: three (3), six (6), nine (9), or twelve (12) months from September 2014 to August 2015

Number of awards: a total of 120 months of study in Taiwan

Deadlines: Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2014. We cannot accept any applications that are postmarked later than this date.

Note: Awarded candidates who withdraw may not re-apply the following three (3) years.
