About the FY 2013 HEP Project Directors' Meeting

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) will conduct the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Higher Education Programs (HEP) Project Directors’ Meeting from March 26-28, 2013 at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. The HEP Project Directors’ Meeting will bring ED representatives and national experts together with grantees from programs administered by the Institutional Service (IS), Student Service (SS), and Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) divisions of the Office of Postsecondary Education. This meeting is developed specifically for each grantee’s project director or equivalent primary contact person (i.e., the project staff person who is authoritatively appointed and responsible for the day-to-day supervision and performance of the grant award).

The relationship between HEP Program Officers and Project Directors (grantees) is a cooperative monitoring function, defined by Federal statutes and regulations and by HEP’s internal standards of conduct and expectations. It is important that Project Directors attend meetings related to their programs hosted by ED. Therefore, HEP is providing early notification to grantees of our plan to host an all-HEP Project Directors’ Meeting to ensure that grantees set aside funds in their budgets to cover travel and other related expenses for the 2013 meeting. Over the years, this technical assistance opportunity has brought together hundreds of HEP grantees to meet with ED representatives and national experts to discuss ideas and issues that help to ensure long-term project effectiveness.

The FY 2013 meeting will support President Barack Obama’s goal that the United States produce the world’s highest proportion of college graduates, and the world’s most competitive workforce, by the year 2020. President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan agree that education is not only an economic necessity for the Nation, but a moral imperative. "America’s future is directly linked to the quality of education that we provide our children, young people, and adults," as Duncan said in September 2012.

We look forward to seeing you in March 2013. Should you have any questions regarding the registration Web site, the hotel, or the call for presentations and exhibits, you may contact us at info@hepmeetings.com or contact your ED Program Officer.

Sincerely,

James E. Laws, Jr., Ed.D.
Chief of Staff
Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary
for Higher Education Programs
