Service Center

Gregory Smith is the Director of the of the U.S. Department of Education's Freedom of Information Act Service Center (FSC). FSC is responsible for receiving, assessing, and subsequently disclosing information in response to requests made to the department under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Greg has more than 20 years of federal service in managing information resources at multiple agencies, including the Departments of Justice and Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Indian Gaming Commission, and the Patent and Trademark Office.

Greg makes a concerted effort to ensure the Department's FOIA program, in keeping with the spirit of Open Government and Transparency outlined in President Obama's 2009 FOIA Memorandum, provides a mechanism for making government more open by allowing the public to request information that the government is statutorily obligated to provide.
