Office of the Under Secretary

Primary Delegations Of Authority

The Secretary has delegated the following authorities to the Under Secretary, subject to certain reservations:

  • Authority to designate an office of the Department to coordinate departmental activities as they relate to the outlying areas;
  • Authority to administer oaths of office, on special occasions and upon request, to new employees of the department;
  • Authority to serve as Chairperson of the Department of Education’s Investment Review Board and to make decisions regarding the Board’s Charter
  • Authority to review and decide appeals of all initial challenges under the Federal Activities Inventory Reform Act of 1998 (FAIR Act).

The Secretary has also delegated to all Principal Officers certain administrative authorities subject to certain reservations.
