I. MISSION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief Operating Officer for Federal Student Aid advises the Secretary on matters related to the Department's operation of student financial assistance programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. The Office directs, coordinates, and recommends policies for programs that are designed to:

• Provide financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in postsecondary educational institutions.

• Deliver grants, loans, and work-study assistance to nearly nine million students through approximately 6,000 postsecondary institutions, 4,800 lenders, and 35 guarantee organizations.

• Collect more than $150 million in outstanding loans with data systems that track 93 million student loans and 15 million Pell Grants.

II. ORGANIZATION

Federal Student Aid is under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer for Federal Student Aid who reports to the Secretary. (See Proposed Realignment Organization Chart)

III. ORDER OF SUCCESSION

In the event that theChief Operating Officer dies, resigns or is otherwise unable to perform the functions and duties of the office, and the office is thereby deemed to be vacant, the Chief of Staff shall temporarily perform the functions and duties of the office in an acting capacity.

In instances where the office is not vacant, but the Chief Operating Officeris absent, the following officials, in the order shown, shall perform the functions and duties of the office:

Chief Customer Experience Officer
Chief Compliance Officer
