Chief of Staff
Lauren Thompson Starks serves as the Chief of Staff to the Office of the General Counsel. In this capacity, Ms. Thompson Starks provides support to the Acting General Counsel and Deputy General Counsels on substantive and organizational priorities, serves as a liaison to the Department’s principal offices, and helps develop strategic practices and guidelines for OGC.
Prior to joining the Department, Ms. Thompson Starks practiced law as an attorney at Shook, Hardy and Bacon in Washington, D.C. She has previously worked as a fellow in higher education administration at Yale University in the offices of the President and Vice President, and in the Yale Office of the General Counsel. She also worked at the Department previously as a full-time legal extern in OGC.
A native of Atlanta, Ms. Thompson Starks is passionate about a broad range of education issues. She has mentored in New Haven Public Schools and volunteered internationally with programs in Sierra Leone and Guatemala. She earned her B.A. from Yale in Ethics, Politics, and Economics, and her J.D. from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
