Director, School Support and Technology Programs

Sylvia Wright is the Director of School Support and Technology Programs (SSTP) at the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. SSTP is responsible for the administration of 16 programs, all of which assist the efforts of schools to improve student achievement. SSTP also has responsibility for coordination of the NCLB consolidated State application and reports initiative. SSTP provides States and school districts flexibility in the administration and use of Federal program funds, provide technical assistance in several critical educational areas, and provide grant support for technology and other State and local education projects.
Sylvia has provided leadership for many Department of Education programs and initiatives. Before assuming her current position, she was a Group Leader in the School Improvement Programs office where she had oversight responsibility for the Magnet Schools and Charter Schools programs and, at one point, for all discretionary grant programs in that office. Other programs in which she held key positions include the Indian Education programs administered in the Office of Indian Education and international education programs in the former U.S. Office of Education.
Sylvia has led many efforts to improve program administration and customer service. Early in her career she was a member of a small team of professionals who planned, designed and implemented a Department-wide (HEW) and interdisciplinary Environmental Education program. More recently she led major Department level management improvement teams, including one team that re-engineered the Department's discretionary grants process.
Sylvia received a BA and MA from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
