Picture of Jackie Jackson Effective May 16, 2004, Dr. Jacquelyn "Jackie" Jackson was appointed the director of Student Achievement and School Accountability (SASA) Programs, formerly Compensatory Education Programs, at the U.S. Department of Education. The SASA Programs Office is responsible for the administration of over $13 billion dollars in Federal programs designed to promote improved achievement in schools that serve low-income children.

In addition to the Title I, Part A program, as director of SASA, Jackie is responsible for the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program, the Even Start Family Literacy Programs, the Early Reading First program, the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, Enhanced Assessment Grants, and Programs for Children and Youth Who are Neglected, Delinquent, or At-Risk.

Before her appointment as director, Jackie served as acting director of SASA as well as deputy director. Before joining the Title I office, she was on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment at New American Schools, where she was responsible for developing and piloting standards of quality for comprehensive school reform (CSR) models. In addition, she was the district liaison responsible for developing plans and providing technical assistance to States and districts implementing Comprehensive School Reform.

Jackie began her employment at the Department of Education in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, where she analyzed, monitored, and evaluated special education programs. She was then chosen to participate in Goals 2000 in a leadership capacity to help develop policy and guidance. From there she was assigned to the assistant secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education to provide organizational leadership and guidance to the regional service teams and group leaders.

Prior to joining the Department of Education, Jackie held numerous teaching and administrative positions in the District of Columbia Public Schools. She has also been an adjunct professor at George Washington University, Trinity College, and the University of the District of Columbia.

Jackie has a bachelor of arts from Howard University and a masters and doctorate of education from George Washington University.
