Primary Functions of the Office of Indian Education

  • Grants Management - Design and oversee system for administering all types of Indian education grants, including formula and discretionary.

  • Evaluation - Prepare and track performance indicators and help carry out national evaluations of programs.

  • Interagency Coordination - Provide leadership for ED-wide policy coordination in Indian education, formulating policy and guidance, and identifying key issue areas.

  • Communication - Help develop and implement a system for maintaining open communications with the field through a strong relationship with the National Advisory Council on Indian Education (NACIE).

Office of Indian Education Values Statement

  • Program Operations: We will provide high-quality services to American Indian and Alaska Native students through effective program operations.

  • Learning Organization: We will create an environment conducive to learning, that empowers all staff to develop and achieve high standards for the organization to meet its mission.

  • Professional Development: We will actively engage in developing ourselves professionally and personally to enhance the performance of the Office of Indian Education and further our career goals.

The mission of the U.S. Department of Education is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the nation.
