photo of Darla Marburger Darla Marburger was appointed to serve as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education on November 18, 2002. In this capacity, she acts as the principal advisor to the Assistant Secretary on the formulation, development and execution of policy affecting the delivery of education in grades pre-K through 12. She also orchestrates the Office's activities required for the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act to ensure states, districts and schools are accountable for providing every child with a quality education.

Prior to her appointment, Marburger served as the Senior Policy Analyst for the Texas Senate Education Committee where she was an active member of the policy team that affected education reform in Texas. As the Senior Policy Analyst, she advised the Committee Chair and served as a resource to the full Senate on various education issues at the elementary, secondary and post secondary levels. In this research and advisory role, she developed legislation in assessment and accountability, reading, bilingual education, P-16 initiatives, post-affirmative action, participation in and access to higher education, and teacher recruitment, certification and retention.

Marburger began her policy career in 1994 as a congressional advisor on agricultural and natural resource issues. She began working for the Texas Legislature in 1995. Her grasp of educational and legislative issues has made her the speaker of choice to local, state and national groups.

The daughter of Maynard and Dawn Marburger, she attended Texas A&M University where she earned a B.S. in Agricultural Journalism and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics. As an active member of her church and community, Marburger has organized many community service projects and served as a volunteer teacher of English as a Second Language. She attributes her desire to serve and much of her life learning to being the seventh of her parents' 20 children.
