Commissioners

The Commission is composed of 30 members appointed by the President who have relevant experience or subject matter expertise that the President deems appropriate. Appointed members also represent a variety of sectors, including the education sector (early childhood education, elementary and secondary education, higher education, career and technical education, and adult education), labor organizations, research institutions, corporate and financial institutions, public and private philanthropic organizations, and nonprofit and community-based organizations at the national, state, regional, or local levels.

In remarks given during the White House Initiative's executive order signing ceremony, the President introduced Eduardo Padron, president of Miami-Dade College, as the chair of the Presidential Advisory Commission. As chair, Padron will work with Executive Director Juan Sepúlveda to convene regular Commission meetings, determine its agenda, and direct its work.

Additional Commission members have yet to be named, as the vetting process for nominees will not be completed for several more months. Once the process is complete and the selected Commissioners informed, White House Initiative staff will post the Commission list on ED.gov and on its Facebook page.

Scope of Work

The Presidential Advisory Commission advises the President and the Secretary on matters pertaining to the education attainment of the Hispanic community, including:

• Developing, implementing, and coordinating educational programs and initiatives at the Department and other agencies to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for Hispanics of all ages;
• Increasing the participation of the Hispanic community and Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the Department's programs and in education programs at other agencies;
• Engaging the philanthropic, business, nonprofit, and education communities in a national dialogue regarding the mission and objectives of this order; and
• Establishing partnerships with public, private, philanthropic, and nonprofit stakeholders to meet the mission and policy objectives of this order.

The Commission will convene at least twice annually. In addition, the group may work through task forces composed exclusively of Commission members.
