Designing and Executing Effective Data Review Routines
The School Turnaround Community of Practice discussed developing rigorous routines for reviewing school turnaround data within State education agency teams and as part of data meetings with local educational agencies and schools during a webinar with the Evaluating Turnaround Efforts Working Group on April 25, 2013. The Working Group reviewed the characteristics of strong data review routines and discussed how such routines can be used as part of a performance management process in the context of school turnaround. State leaders in Hawaii highlighted examples of how their State has implemented routines to regularly explore data and progress related to the State's turnaround work. Using Data to Support Turnaround Efforts
The School Turnaround Community of Practice focused on interpreting and discussing school turnaround data during a webinar with the Evaluating Turnaround Efforts Working Group on April 8, 2013. Nick Rodriguez with the U.S. Education Delivery Institute led a discussion on interpreting data from leading indicators and walked participants through an analysis of "real-time" State turnaround data to highlight an inquiry approach to data analysis. Delaware shared how their State is utilizing such strategies for engaging in robust conversations using data. The webinar presentation is available here. [PDF, 1.26MB].
Setting and Managing Turnaround Goals
The School Turnaround Community of Practice reviewed promising practices for setting and managing turnaround goals during a webinar with the Evaluating Turnaround Efforts Working Group on February 21, 2013. Nick Rodriguez with the U.S. Education Delivery Institute discussed potential strategies for setting and aligning turnaround targets and trajectories at the State, district and school levels. Massachusetts shared how their State has incorporated the use of targets and trajectories in their turnaround work. The webinar presentation is available here. [PDF, 801KB]
Leading Indicators of Turnaround Success: School-Level Indicators
The School Turnaround Community of Practice discussed promising practices on using leading indicators as early evidence that school turnarounds are on track during a webinar with the Evaluating Turnaround Efforts Working Group on January 31, 2013. Tim Field and Julie Kowal with Public Impact reviewed research on principles for selecting leading indicators and potential actions that turnaround leaders can take in the first year to enhance the likelihood of success. State leaders with the Tennessee Achievement School District and the Rhode Island Department of Education also shared their current practices developing and using leading indicators with districts and schools. Excellent Teachers for Turnaround Schools: Innovative Models and Approaches
The School Turnaround Community of Practice discussed innovative staffing approaches for turnaround schools during a webinar held on December 6, 2012. Bryan Hassel and Julie Kowal with Public Impact presented research on innovative staffing approaches in turnaround schools and highlighted examples at the State, regional and district levels to extend the reach of excellent teachers. Aligning Race to the Top, School Improvement Grants and ESEA Flexibility
The U.S. Department of Education hosted a webinar conversation on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 with representatives from the Race to the Top, School Improvement Grant and ESEA Flexibility programs to discuss approaches for aligning the work of Federal programs at the State level. Program representatives responded to States' questions on program requirements and alignment of State efforts to support low-performing schools. Turnaround Teacher Retention
The School Turnaround CoP discussed ways that States may support and guide LEAs and schools to retain excellent teachers, particularly in a turnaround setting, during a webinar on October 19, 2012. Tim Daly, President of TNTP, reviewed promising practices for teacher retention based on findings from TNTP's recent report, The Irreplaceables: Understanding the Real Retention Crisis in America's Urban Schools. Promising Practices for Recruitment and Staffing in Turnaround Schools
The School Turnaround CoP discussed promising practices for recruiting, hiring and making the best use of teacher talent in turnaround schools during a webinar on September 13, 2012. The group reviewed research and emerging practices for recruiting and staffing in turnarounds, and actions that State leaders may take to support LEA and school efforts to build talent for turnaround schools.
