Overview of the Civil Rights Data Collection

The 2004 data collection opened in January 2005.

Ensuring Equal Access to Education and Promoting Educational Excellence throughout the Nation through Enforcement of Civil Rights.

Pursuant to Federal civil rights laws, the 2004 ED Civil Rights Data Collection is one source of data on key education and civil rights issues in our nation's public schools. The data collection provides information about the enrollment of, and the educational services provided to, students in public schools in every state by race/ethnicity, sex, and disability. Information gathered through this data collection is used by the Office for Civil Rights, other offices within the U.S. Department of Education, education researchers, and policy makers.

The 2004 ED Civil Rights Data Collection introduced a new web-based collection component. This web-based component is an integral part of ED's Performance Based Data Management Initiative (PBDMI), and supports ED's strategic objective of using electronic government to improve services to our partners. If you haven't already, we strongly encourage you to complete the 2004 ED Civil Rights Data Collection using this new web-based component.
