ITEM: SCHOOL PROJECTS TO HELP IMPROVE TEACHER SKILLS -- Teachers in 16 states will improve their instructional skills and subject knowledge under 25 new projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

More than $2 million dollars has been awarded to support the new School-Level Projects of the department's Schools and Teachers Program. The projects offer enrichment activities for elementary and secondary teachers and principals to help improve student learning and to upgrade their status as professional educators.

"These initiatives to support improved professional development for educators will complement the work being done by states under the new Goals 2000 Act," said Sharon Robinson, assistant secretary for educational research and improvement.

The projects are conducted at individual schools or with a consortium of schools and are managed by a full-time teacher or administrator. The projects run from one to three years with awards ranging from $42,130 to $125,000.

For example: In Fairfax County, Va., three teachers will lead research efforts in their schools, lead a forum of teacher- researchers from other schools, show how teachers' research can influence school programs and policies and help plan staff development. Plans include a teacher-researcher conference, publication and sharing of research and the formation of a network of teacher-researchers across districts. The teachers are expected to contribute to the body of knowledge about teaching and learning and report on strategies for building and supporting teacher research.

The Schools and Teachers Program School-Level Projects are authorized by the Hawkins-Stafford Elementary and Secondary School Improvement Amendments of 1988 (P.L. 100-297).
